Having lunch today I was involved in a conversation about LinkedIn. Several of my classmates believe it is unnecessary or a waste of time. Why create a page based off of your resume.. when you can just have a resume? You would think in a generation on top of the newest and latest trends, more people would opt for the electronic connection tool. I believe a resume is still top-dog when looking for a job. It is completely needed, but a LinkedIn can also help!
I've had a page for about two years, and it has been very beneficial to me. I've heard about internships, jobs, and different market trends through my feed or connections. Attending the PRSSANC, I was able to connect with people in companies I would love to work for. It takes a good amount of time to come up with an impressive page, but it is worth it. Many internships recently have asked me if I would like to apply via LinkedIn, or to follow their LinkedIn pages. It gives an insight into where the business is heading, and more about their internal structure and organizational culture. It is easy to apply for jobs, but it doesn't stop there. Classmates and co-workers can "endorse" you for your various skills. I love social media, and colleagues of mine have endorsed me for different sites, and it has helped me become part of the social media team at different internships. It doesn't mean you can get rid of your resume altogether, but showing a potential employer both can help you gain an upper hand on the competition.
In the end, do I think it is necessary? I do not think you will be declined a job because your lack of presence on LinkedIn - but it is beneficial! You can find companies in your field, people to connect with, and ways to boost resume and cover letter skills. It will not hurt you, it will only help!
